June Ukulele Karate

We are wrapping up ukulele karate for this school year. More and more students are earning their black belts! It has been such a fun unit and I am very impressed with how driven students have been to keep working toward earning their next belt.

3rd graders are in the last few weeks of working on the ukulele karate curriculum. Ukulele karate is a unit I created, based on Recorder Karate, where students work individually or with a partner to earn different colored belts for completing different songs. Students are able to work at their own pace. Often at the end of class students are given the option to perform for their classmates. Below are some performances by students in the month of May.

3rd Grade Learns Ukulele!

3rd graders started learning the ukulele this week! They will play ukulele for the next month or so in music class, learning various different chords and many fun songs!

2nd Grade Learns Ukulele!

The 2nd graders got to learn ukulele for a 45 minute class period as a kind of 'sneak peak' for learning the ukulele more in depth next fall. They had just finished learning about the string family in the orchestra. In 45 minutes students learned how to hold, strum, and play a C chord on the ukulele!

Winter Concert 2015 Pictures and Videos

Wow! What a fun winter concert. I'm so proud of the hard work students did and how brave they were to perform in front of a large crowd.

Our concert was on Thursday, December 10th at the Shapleigh School gymnasium. Grades K/1 had their concert first at 6 PM. The grades 2/3 concert followed at 6:45 PM.

The ukes are in! That means our ukulele wall is complete and 3rd graders will start learning ukulele next week! Yay!!
