Spooky Sound Poems Grade 3

3rd graders added instruments to spooky poems to make them sound poems! They worked in small groups to decide what words to play instruments on and what instrument sounded like what word.
Here is a video of us playing a pre-made sound poem as a class to get ideas:

Drumming Unit Grade 3

3rd graders have spent the last two weeks learning about body percussion and drumming. Here are some videos of 3rd grade classes performing the poem "If you See a Monkey." They work on using the high notes on the edge of the drum and the low notes in the middle of the drum.
Students also learned about what an "Ostinato" is. It is a rhythmic pattern that is repeated. In this case, the ostinato is the poem that they repeated 3 times.

Long-Short Grade 1

1st graders have been learning about sound opposite in music. First they learned about forte-piano and now they are learning about long and short sounds. In the video below students play short sounds using their rhythm sticks and make long sounds using their scarves. They pretend they are pulling taffy like you see at Goldenrod on Short Sands in York, ME!

Boomwhackers Grade 2

2nd graders are doing their second week of boomwhackers and are having lots of fun! Here is Mrs. JR's class performing Baa Baa Black Sheep on the boomwhackers!

We have new "octavator caps" in music this year which are the black caps on the bottom of the boomwhackers. This allows you to hit the boomwhacker on the ground and it makes the note a whole octave lower! So not only do we have longer and lower boomwhackers that we can stand up to play, but we have octavator caps to make them sound even lower! :-)

2nd graders spent a week in October doing boomwhacker stations. Students got to rotate to 6 different stations to practice their boomwhacker and rhythm skills.

Music Share Week June 6-10, 2016

MUSIC SHARE WEEK!
June 6-10, 2016 (June 16th instead of 9th for Thursday classes due to Fort Foster trip)
*Dates and times will vary depending on when you have music class.

Music Share is an opportunity for students to share something musical with their peers during music class. They may bring in an instrument from home and store it in the music room for the day if needed, or use any of the classroom instruments we have. They can share anything musical (even a poem, skit, or dance routine!) that they have thought through and planned. Usually we have enough time for each child to share one or two things.

The purpose of having a performance day is to give children an opportunity to perform in front of a small, friendly, known group and learn the etiquette of doing so; to provide a platform for sharing musical ideas and interests; and to give the rest of the class practice at being respectful audience members. Most important, performing is completely voluntary and meant to occur in a casual, stress-free environment.

Here are some ideas for your music share. Be creative! J :
-Sing a song
-Do a dance
-Recite a poem
-Show an instrument from home
-Play an instrument from school
-Create your own instrument
-Make up a dance with friends and perform
-Do a skit with friends
-Share your favorite song on Youtube (Links can be emailed to me at smoon@kitteryschools.com or I can look them up in advance)
-Tell about your favorite musical, song, or singer/songwriter
-Share a memory of music class
-Choose an activity we have done in music to repeat
And much more!

If you have questions feel free to call the school or email me at smoon@kitteryschools.com
Have fun!
